Beginner’s Guide – The Ragdoll Cat At A Glance

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 by Jenny Dean
Guest Post by Isabella Woods

Ragdoll CatYou have probably come to this site to find out a bit about the Ragdoll Cat breed, and what to expect if you chose to have one. Since the site is so comprehensive in its coverage, you may like to have a just a summary to read before jumping right in, so here is a quick guide to Ragdoll cats and what to expect from one.

Brains
Firstly, there is a myth that needs to be dispelled before you read any further. The Ragdoll cat is not a dull, unintelligent lap cat who barely moves around. It is not inbred, or lacking in character. These myths began when the breed first appeared, clearly fed by those who had never come across such placid affectionate cats before! It is true that Ragdoll cats are highly relaxed, placid creatures, and love nothing more to be stroked and loved. But they are as intelligent as any other cat. In fact, of all the cats I have owned my Ragdoll cat is the cleverest.

Beauty
As with many perfect packages, brains and beauty come together. Many owners are attracted to the breed because of the gentleness of its nature. But Ragdolls are very beautiful animals that would be sought after even if this were not the case. They are large cats, with fairly long coats. They don’t have an ‘undercoat’ of fur like other cats, which means that often those with allergies to this kind of cat fur are more tolerant of them as pets.

They are not low maintenance animals. You will need to groom and maintain your Ragdoll’s coat, as you would with any other longhaired breed. The Ragdoll has beautiful soft fur, with a silky feel and often have thick handsome ruffs around the neck, which frame their faces beautifully. The fur around their hind legs and tummies is particularly attractive, giving them an adorable furry trousered look. Neutered cats have the longest coats. All Ragdoll cats, however, have one feature that sets them apart in terms of beauty. Their eyes. Ragdoll cats always have the most stunning eyes, which are offset by their fur colours extremely well. Have a look at the photos on this site for an illustration of this.

Colours
Ragdoll cats come in a range of colours including Blue, Chocolate, Cream, Lilac, Seal and Red, in Solid Points, Tortie Points, Tabby Points and Tortie Tabby Points. Quite a choice! These colours can be mixed together in a Colourpointed, Mitted, and Bicolour pattern. Lilac and Chocolate Ragdoll cats are less common than other colours.

Health Complaints
The Ragdoll breed is no different from any other cat in its health care needs, and needs no special consideration health wise. So other than the normal requirement to compare pet insurance and find the best one out there, you can rest assured that your pedigree cat will not be more expensive to look after than any other feline.

Character
As noted, Ragdoll cats have a gentle, relaxed disposition. They are loving, and devoted to their owners, enjoy human company and are excellent with children. They are highly sought after for this characteristic. Quite simply, they are the perfect pet. As kittens they are lively and playful. As adult cats they can grow to be big however, especially the males. Some people have compared Ragdoll cats of dogs, in temperament, and there are similarities not found in other felines. Their sheer affection for the humans that own them is unusually strong. They will come when called and pine for you when you’re away. They are loyal and loving, just like a dog.

Another Myth
You may have heard that Ragdoll cats have a higher pain threshold than other animals. This is total nonsense.

Weight
A fully-grown female weighs from 8 pounds (3.6 kg) to 15 pounds (6.8 kg). Males range from 12 pounds (5.4 kg) to 20 pounds (9.1 kg). It is worth bearing this in mind when choosing which sex of Ragdoll to choose. Small children can find the larger males quite difficult to pick up and manage, so if your Ragdoll is going to be primarily a family pet, you may prefer to opt for a smaller female.

Conclusion
It’s genuinely hard to find any negative things to say about this breed, in summary. It’s beautiful, intelligent, affectionate and easy to care for. What are you waiting for?

***ADOPTED*** Ragdoll Rehoming St. Paul, MN - Giorgio & Higgins - Ragdoll Rescue Minneapolis

Wednesday, August 17, 2011 by Ragdoll Rehoming Team
Ragdoll Rescue***ADOPTED***

I got Giorgio and Higgins when I was living alone, and now my husband is very allergic to them. He's tried for two years to survive, constantly taking Claritin and even trying allergy shots. They are just too much. I love them dearly, so I will be very particular about the home they go to. I have had them both since they were kittens. Higgins is the wise, seal point mitted ragdoll. He's very mellow and laid back, but loves to talk and cuddle. Giorgio is the blue bi-color and loves all kinds of attention. He's extremely friendly and will even come when called! They are both fairly large, weighing in around 15 lbs. I have had no health issues with either. Both boys are neutered and still have their claws (they don't scratch furniture). Ideally, they will do best in a home without dogs; our small dogs chase them and they get really stressed. They must go to a home together!

Age: 5 & 6
Sex: Males
Fee: $100 for both
Location: St. Paul, MN

Happy Birthday Charlie!!! Yipee!!!

Saturday, July 23, 2011 by Chiggy Wiggy
EurekaFirst I would like to start out with the Shelter that I have chosen. The Tompkins County (Ithaca, NY) SPCA. I don't live in NY anymore. I actually only lived there for about a year and a half... but what they did for us there is amazing. Years ago, we had a year old pit bull named Badu. It was really late one night and he needed to go outside. We let him out like we always do, but this time, when he came back in, he was profusely bleeding from his leg. He must have cut himself on something pretty sharp. We couldn't get the bleeding to stop, and we were panicking. I was holding him still on the bathroom floor with his leg wrapped in shirts, trying to keep him from bleeding too much while my boyfriend at the time called emergency vet lines frantically. All I can remember is hearing him say that "My dog's going to bleed to death, and you say you can't do anything unless we have $250 on the spot?" Over and over again we tried to call places, but they would come get him unless we had mega cash up front. Finally, when I thought it wasn't going to work out, He called the Tompkins County SPCA. They said they were on their way, and the lady talked with us over the phone, explaining to us that all we would have to do is sign him over to them, they would fix his leg, neuter him while they were at it, and then we could 're-adopt' him for $50. We were fine with that. They did a fantastic job of fixing his leg, which they kept us informed the whole time he was with them. The fact is, they put him first, not cash. They actually acted like they cared. No matter what time it was, where we were, or what situation we were in. We visited that shelter many times after that, walking the dogs voluntarily, playing and feeding the cats and just talking to the people that loved doing what they did for the animals. It truly made an impact on my life. THIS is why they deserve this.

Seal Mitted Ragdoll Cat Kitten EurekaAnd lastly, my baby Eureka :) 5 month old Seal Mitted Ragdoll of furry fury! Lemme tell ya how much of an impact he's made on our lives: I have an anxiety disorder. It's especially bad in the morning. They call it waking anxiety. Since we've had him, every morning when I wake up and start to feel bad, here comes this fur ball, bouncing around the house, jumping in my lap, rolling on his back and looking up at me with those baby blue eyes. My mood escalates immediately. Every time I see him, he puts a smile on my face. He could be sleeping, eating, playing, wondering, no matter what, he's strumming my heart chords :) And my boyfriend, a busy, dedicated business owner. Works 7 days a week. Never takes a day off. When he comes home from work, it's usually a routine I could bet money on. Now that Eureka's part of our family, when he comes home, instead of going straight to the computer to or couch, he stops for a second, gets low on the ground, spins a ball around to rouse the cat, grabs the laser pointer and jingles it around, or crinkles one of his catnip fish. Eureka will pounce out, and they have an almost... bonding time. lol. It's really cute. It lifts his spirits, puts a spin on his daily routine as well as mine. His big personality just brightens every single day. I cannot imagine life without him now :) He deserves the best and he's actually been perched on my desk the entire time I've been writing, reminding me of why he needs this prize. ;)

Attached is two recent photos of Eureka. First one is him in one of his favorite lounge spots.. behind the couch in the giant bay window. The other is of him distracting mommy while she's doing laundry :)

I know everybody that loves their baby as much as I do deserves this giveaway. I've never won a thing in my life (other than the chance to own such a loveable Ragdoll) So here it goes! Hope you enjoy what I share! And the facebook challenge is done as well.

Love and Hugs to Charlie and Triggy!!!!

Seal Mitted Ragdolls

Saturday, May 21, 2011 by Jenny Dean
Seal Mitted Ragdolls are my favorite coloring of Ragdolls.  This is probably because this is the coloring that I grew up with and the color of the Ragdoll cat that I knew and loved, Halston:
Halston, Marcus and Tiffanny
Then, of course, I got Skittles, a seal mitted Ragdoll that died at two years of age because of FIP.

After Skittles died (I need to get a photo uploaded of Skittles on here), my mom got Rags and Cosby for us.  Rags and Cosby shared the same father, but had different mothers.

Cosby died at 10 months of age because of FIP and Rags, as you know, if you read this blog, lived to be 19.5 years old.
Seal Mitted Ragdoll Cat

When Rags was 15, I talked my mom into getting two kittens - the sole purpose of this was so that I could steal Rags and take him to my house to have him to myself.

It worked and Caymus and Murphy entered our lives.
Caymus
Caymus, Rags and Murphy

When Rags died in March 2009, I began to look for Ragdolls - I wanted one related to Rags and I didn't care about the coloring or pattern, I just wanted a male related to Rags.  That's how I got Trigg.  I am a fan of his coloring, but not like I am of the seal mitted color pattern.  It was Charlie that met exactly what I was looking for - seal mitted with an hourglass blaze.

What is your favorite color pattern?

What is the color pattern of your Ragdoll cat?  Please feel free to share a photo and a small story about your cat or you might even want to submit your Ragdoll as Ragdoll of the Week on our website.

Brawny Cat Scratch N Slumber Big Baby Jr. Arrives For Product Testing!

Tuesday, November 16, 2010 by Jenny Dean
Beds for catsWhen it comes to beds for cats that is also a great cardboard cat scratcher, Brawny Cat has the competition beat.  Have you ever checked out Brawny Cat?  They have some really cool beds.

Currently, these are the beds for cats that they sell:
  • The Big Baby
  • Big Baby Jr.
  • B' Tweener
  • Sleeky Lounge
Andrew over at Brawny Cat was kind enough to send us their Big Baby, Jr. for Caymus and Murphy, seal mitted Ragdolls, to try out.

The Big Baby Jr. measures 22"W x 23" D x 9" H - Brawny Cat refers to this one as their XL size.

To be fair, Caymus and Murphy had already tried out the Brawny Cat Big Baby that we had already done a product review on a few months back, but they didn't have one for themselves (they are my parents' cats and don't live with me - so they didn't have a Big Baby in their own home).
Beds for cats

Here is a video I captured of Caymus and Murphy checking out their new bed:

My mom reports that Caymus is using the bed regularly and is usually upside down when she finds him on it.
